With an estimated 20 million people set to embark on a road trip this October half term, we’ve polled the nation to reveal some of the UK’s most popular destinations, as well as top tips to make your journey hassle-free.

Areas of outstanding natural beauty offer a great chance to explore the best of what Britain has to offer, and with National Trust sites aplenty, you won’t be short of an adventure.

Most popular places to visit by car this half term:

  • Lake District - Stop at Gretna Green or Charnock Richard
  • Scotland - Stop at Abington or Gretna Green
  • Cornwall - Stop at Fleet or Gordano
  • Wales - Stop at Sarn Park, Cardiff Gate or Telford
  • London - Stop at South Mimms, London Gateway or Fleet

Any good road trip requires great snacks and 58% said that they are a key part to any journey. The most favoured treats include sweets (42%), crisps (41%) and chocolate (36%). Don’t worry if you’ve not stocked up, stop with us at Welcome Break and enjoy a large selection of your favourite sweets and treats!

13% of those on the roads will bicker because of the length of journeys.

  • Fatigue (28%)
  • Wrong directions (17%)
  • Toilet breaks (14%)
  • Boredom (12%)
  • Bad music choices and backseat driving (10%)

With two thirds (66%) of Brits planning a road trip in the coming weeks, be sure to take regular rest breaks or stop at one of our hotels and get a good night’s sleep.

Wherever you’re heading this half term, make sure to plan ahead for the smoothest journey possible. Visit our journey planner and ensure that you have a Welcome Break stop to keep the getaway going strong.

With 59 sites across the country, we have you covered, whether you need to stock up on snacks, take a toilet break, or just step away from the car for a breather. From 25th October until 3rd November, we have lots of Halloween activities, such as ghost hunts and parties taking place at participating sites for help break up the boredom.
