HGV Driver Wellness Initiative

The Welcome Break Charitable Fund is proud to be bringing together Macmillan Cancer Support, Mates in Mind and Road Haulage Association to launch our HGV driver wellness initiative. HGV drivers play a crucial role in logistics, not only across the UK but around the world. Their dedication and time on the road can often come at the expense of both physical and mental health. That is why we’re joining together to promote the importance of regular check-ins and check-ups.

As we launch this initiative, we hope that by providing the relevant support, HGV drivers will have better access to the resources they need.  Both Macmillan and Mates in Mind bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise within their sector, and the RHA represents the UK's largest dedicated trade association for HGV, coach, and van operators. Read below to find out more about both charities, and how they can help.

Macmillan Cancer Support

Life on the road doesn’t stop for cancer — and neither do we.

Macmillan Cancer Support is here to help you every mile of the way, with practical advice, expert information, and emotional support for you and your loved ones. Whether you’ve been diagnosed, are worried about symptoms, or supporting someone else, we’re here to make sure no driver faces cancer alone.

If you ever need to talk, call the Macmillan Support Line on 0808 808 00 00 (open 7 days a week, 8am–8pm), or visit our website for trusted information on signs and symptoms as well as support for you.

Mates in Mind

At Mates in Mind, we understand that long and irregular hours, delivery schedules, limited access to facilities, isolation, being away from home and family, amongst other factors, can all contribute to stress, and can affect concentration and therefore performance and safety. This is why we work with organisations to support their drivers by building positive mental health in and through work.

Whether you are reading this in your vehicle, at a Welcome Break, in an office, or at home, we have a wealth of resources and blogs that can help you recognise the signs of mental ill-health in yourself and those around you, learn how to start a conversation, where to get support if you need it and how to optimise your own mental health.

Please remember you are never alone, there is always someone who can help.

Road Haulage Association

At the RHA, we understand the pressures facing people working across the HGV, coach and van sectors. Long hours, increasing operational demands, rising costs, regulatory pressures and limited roadside facilities can all have an impact on wellbeing, resilience and day-to-day life. That’s why improving driver wellbeing and support remains an important priority for the RHA.

RHA members and their immediate families have access to the RHA Member Assistance Programme with PAM Wellbeing - a free and confidential 24/7 support service offering professional guidance across areas including stress, anxiety, bereavement, relationships and financial wellbeing.

Support is also available through the RHA Benevolent Fund, which exists to help individuals and families facing hardship, financial difficulties or unexpected life challenges.

The RHA is proud to support the Welcome Break HGV Wellness Initiative and the wider industry commitment to improving wellbeing across road transport.

Please remember - support is available, and nobody has to face difficult times alone. Those wishing to find out more about accessing support should speak to their Area Manager.
