Welcome Break Charitable Fund support Macmillan Cancer Support

Say hello to Douglas!

Douglas, the Macmillan Bear, is helping to raise money for Macmillan

Date Posted 11/09/2024 Welcome Break Charitable Fund

About Douglas the Macmillan Bear

In 1911, a young man named Douglas Macmillan watched his father die of cancer. His father's pain and suffering moved Douglas so much, he founded the Society for the Prevention and Relief of Cancer. Douglas wanted advice and information to be provided to all people with cancer, homes for patients at low or no cost, and voluntary nurses to attend to patients in their own homes.

Today much of Douglas's legacy lives on. Macmillan have continually adapted the support they offer to ensure it’s right for people today, and will be right in the future too. The purchase of Douglas the Bear will continue to honour Douglas Macmillan’s legacy and a pledge from us to continue supporting people living with cancer.

"I am delighted to announce the launch of Douglas, the Macmillan Bear, now available at Welcome Break locations across the country. Each purchase of Douglas plays a vital role in supporting Macmillan's mission to be there for those impacted by cancer, and we extend our deepest gratitude to Welcome Break for their unwavering partnership. These adorable bears are more than just a keepsake—they represent Macmillan being by your side when you need it the most. I personally can't wait to visit a Welcome Break and bring one home." - Becky Ettinger, Head of Corporate Partnerships at Macmillan

About the Welcome Break Charitable Fund

Welcome Break support Macmillan Cancer through the Welcome Break Charitable Fund. The Welcome Break Charitable Fund was set up to give back to the communities in which Welcome Break operates in. For every £1 donated to the Welcome Break Charitable Fund, 65p is donated to Macmillan Cancer Support, 30p is donated to Community Projects and 5p to National Emergencies Trust.

From 2023, our main charity partner has been Macmillan Cancer Support and so far, we have raised an incredible £332,248.87 for the charity. We’re incredibly proud to have raised this money and be able to support Macmillan Cancer Support, who help everyone with cancer live life as fully as they can, providing physical, financial and emotional support.

The Douglas Macmillan Bear is available to shop in our WHSmith stores from today, with 100% of profits going to Macmillan. Pick up your Douglas today and tag us in photos of his journeys on the motorway and beyond!
